Andrew Sullivan, who is gay, writing in NY Magazine two weeks ago about the left’s bullying on sexuality issues, and defending Maya Forstater, who was fired from a UK charity after stating that a woman cannot change her sex. What follows are quotes from Sullivan’s article:

“One of the… principles of the gay-rights movement has been that it’s wrong to fire someone just because they’re gay. Now, one of the principles of the LGBTQ movement is that it’s fine to fire someone if they disagree in the slightest w/ every claim of gender ideology.”

“This shift from a ‘live and let live’ to a ‘do what I say or else, movement is one reason I don’t identify with this activism any more. I loathe the idea of forcing people to say things they don’t believe,… ostracizing them… and enshrining in law penalties for wrongthink.”

“I am very happy to live alongside people whose faith makes them consider me a sinner. As long as they cannot… use the law to punish me for what I believe and how I live, I’m fine. But that pluralist worldview is anathema to the “social justice” movement…”

“Note that the judgment against Forstater rests not on the idea that she is wrong but that her argument is fundamentally illegitimate and shouldn’t even be entertained,… It rests on the banishment of a valid viewpoint from all public debate on a highly controversial matter.”

“A society that lives by these rules is not a free society. Resisting this authoritarianism of the left is as vital to our liberal democracy as resisting the authoritarianism of the right. Yes, I stand with Maya… It’s a fight for freedom of thought and empirical reality.”

  1. Freedom is becoming impossible in a society that doesn’t have the confidence in its convictions.

Such stigmas are a sign of impotence, an inability to win an argument through debate but instead silence those who disagree. A new blasphemy law but with a new coat of paint.

The irony is palpable and nauseating. Regardless of which position one agrees with, victory of belief should be through the strength of the position in terms of argument not state led intervention.
