St Augustine the pedophile?

This is fascinating:

Augustine died in 430. He was a theologian, philosopher, and the bishop of Hippo Regius in Numidia, Roman North Africa. His writings influenced the development of Western philosophy and Western Christianity, and he is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers of the Latin Church in the Patristic Period. His many important works include The City of God, On Christian Doctrine, and Confessions.

The marriage between Muhammad and A’isha should be considered on the same grounds. To judge an incident nearly 1400 years old by today’s standard (!) of sexuality, without considering geographical and cultural issues of that time, is anachronism and ignorance at best.

  1. Not everything narrated is ligit. Many narration was blown out of proportion when they made it an authorized saying based one once subjective few of the narrators personality. Although, it’s clear in Quran that what’s inside mans heart only Allah Knows. We know from Quran some people around prophet circle where hypocrates, even the prophet does know about them. Hence, there are Hadieth which were authenticated but the fact is these Hadieth were made up by these hidden hypocrates. Read imam Nassir Mohammed Alyamani blog at mahdialumma.com . There you will find the argument against some false hadiths, eventhough it was made authentic .

  2. The proper reference is Augustine’s Confessions, Book 6, chapter 13, 23.

Augustine was 18 or older in his 20s, (but not 50 !!) – this articles says the girl was 12 or 13 at the time of agreement. (meaning he was suppossed to wait until she was 14 or 15) That his mother Monica had picked for him. (context implies she was a Christian and that Monica his mother wanted him to seal his faith by baptism after marriage to a proper girl.)

“One temporary problem was that the young lady in question had not at that time reached the legal age for marriage. The marriage would have to be delayed. Some authors suggest that this could mean that she was as young as twelve or thirteen years of age at the time of the agreement.”

But Augustine never married that girl that Monica, his mother wanted for him; and yet Augustine also had a concubine and was faithful to her for 13 years. When he came to faith in Christ, he sent her away, and after that lived a life of chastity. His “Confessions” are full of descriptions of his slavery to lust and sin; and about his radical conversion to Christ later in life. (at the age of 31) This shows that even in 400 AD, infant baptism was not yet the norm. (it existed, but it was not the widespread trend for everyone yet.)

  3. Modern based christians( especially in the west) have nothing to do with the social biblical culture nor the church fathers’ culture. It is simple as that.

  4. Mohammad is supposed to be a prophet for all times , so trying to justify his marriage to a six year old when he was 54, or the fact that he had 13 wives and unlimited concubines should be seennin the context that he should be a model for all times not merely 7th century.

    • All prophets are prophets for all times, you’re argument makes no sense.

In the vast majority of cultures throughout history and even in the West until after WW2, adulthood was defined by puberty, not 18 & up.

  5. William Albrecht nuked your argument and implications.

He also challenged you to debate him on any subject.

    • Has Sam converted to Catholicism?

      • Not yet, but he is trying, it seems to me, (as far as I can tell) to hold a position between all the Trinitarian groups and welcoming all to his channel – Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodoxy, Assyrian Orthodox, Coptic church, and Protestants who are friendly toward these groups.

He has rejoined an Assyrian Orthodox Church, The Assyrian Church of the East, the church of his ancestors.

  6. He nuked your argument on his own channel.

  7. Gospel of James written in the 2nd century – word of god –
documents say: “mary was 12 years old (or 11 years old according to russian orthodox ) when she got married to joseph – who was 90 years old…”

    Dr. Ali Ataie – @30:00

    • No the gospel of James does not quote Mary as being twelve years old, you are referring to a apocryphal writing in which was rejected by every church father and council and was believed to be unreliable, none of the gospels provide the age of Mary, I myself believe that she remained a perpetual virgin.
