“Desire makes slaves out of kings and patience makes kings out of slaves.”

Al-Ghazali said, “Desire makes slaves out of kings and patience makes kings out of slaves.” Shakespeare describes our desires as wild horses. Ancient Greek philosophers taught that the task of humanity was to control their desires and not to unleash them. So do all the religions.

Modernity on the other hand teaches us to chase and unleash our desires. The result is that more and more things that are seen as progress nowadays are in fact the opposite. People are so confused that they don’t recognise this anymore.
