The photo at the top shows Sylvain Helaine, an elementary school teacher in Palaiseau, France who teaches children up to six years old. The photo underneath is of the head of the Sorbonne University Students’ Union in Paris, Maryam Pougetoux.
After initial protests from some of the parents about Sylvain’s appearance, it was stated that it is part of the freedom of personal choice of people in France and that children will get used to it.
Contrary to this, Maryam’s appearance has been widely condemned. Maryam is a Muslim convert. She receives continuous abuse about her head scarf and was told that the way she looks runs counter to the values of justice and equality of France and that her appearance is shocking to the French. The French have forbidden women to wear burkinis in the past, while at the same time it is fine to appear topless on their beaches. So much for liberté, égalité, fraternité.
