A very strong opinion in classical Islamic jurisprudence holds that when a Muslim ruler conquers a non-Muslim land, he has discretion whether to let its houses of worship be or convert them to mosques. Obviously this was also the norm for pre-modern empires of any religion.
Under this view, there’s nothing inherently unjust in this whatsoever, as it lies within the prerogative of the victors. As I discussed in this thread, no one thought it remotely unusual when Spain demolished mosques or converted them to churches after the reconquista.
Nor was it deemed unjust by anyone in any way when churches became mosques and then churches again as lands were exchanged between empires of different faiths.
Many contemporary Christians continue to accept this norm and would absolutely reject as absurd any suggestion of converting the cathedral of Córdoba back to a mosque, or any of the hundreds of mosques destroyed or repurposed by the Greeks, Serbs etc after Ottoman defeats.
Again as I discussed in the above thread, this doesn’t mean that people experienced no anger or sadness at seeing their mosque or church converted or destroyed. But that sense stemmed from their perception that the forces of falsehood had triumphed over the forces of truth.

Any objection by Christians on this ground, if it is in good faith, must be accompanied by demands that the former mosques of Spain, Greece, Serbia etc be immediately restored.
And likewise, as to those Muslims embracing this classical opinion of Islamic jurisprudence (again, perfectly aligned with then-contemporary norms) to satisfy themselves that Sultan Fatih’s conversion of Aya Sofia to a mosque was just and within his prerogative, and that therefore Erdogan’s decision to overturn Ataturk’s secularism-driven conversion of the mosque to a museum was likewise justified
must accept the decision of the Christian conquerors of the former Muslim domains of Spain & the Ottomans to convert the mosques to churches was not unjust, since (under this view) conquerors may justly do as they please with the houses of worship of the conquered.
And of course the Muslims who accept this principle will still be understandably angry & sad at the conversion of these mosques, but only on the grounds that the forces of falsehood have been victorious, & that the weakness & sinfulness of the Muslims led to this, but not on the grounds that they are somehow the victims of injustice. Likewise if the rulers of the State of Israel decide tomorrow to raze Masjid al-Aqsa & build a Jewish temple on its site..

“Islamic jurisprudence” was formed in a very different age with very different geopolitics and very different sensibilities of all people around the world.
Thus, there are very different implications.
This is not to suggest that everything in 21st century is pure but it conversely states that everything a thousand years ago was not pure either.
I don’t remember seeing any dates of when jurisprudence can begin or end in the Qur’an, do you?
And I would be very cautious of overruling the plain words of God’s direct words with jurisprudence of human beings….not saying it is impossible since all language has connotations and context, but very cautious.
Something that is amiss from Hadith and Empire based jurisprudence instead of jurisprudence based on submission to God’s words first and foremost.
